Alphabet’s Waymo is working on self-driving cars for a while and shows some solid success. For instance, the startup already launched the autonomous taxi service in the US.

However, the recently announced partnership with Renault-Nissan is aimed at giving Waymo’s tech the worldwide launch. As their first step, companies will work on commercial and legal issues of a massive autonomous vehicles popularization in their domestic regions - France and Japan.

For Waymo such partnership seems like the most efficient way of a rapid growth. It may be able to test their technology on a wide fleet of factory-made prototypes - so far Waymo installed their self-driving equipment on purchased Chrysler and Jaguar vehicles.
