VW’s Klaus Zellmer shared some interesting points on  automaker’s plans on the self-driving systems with Top Gear last week.

According to the interview, VW is planning to change the way its cars are equipped. In the near future, all cars it sells will be equipped with all necessary equipment for various options. Though, to activate and use those options VW owners will have to pay extra cash with subscription model. The automaker claims that such model should allow car owners to get exactly what they need in the time they need it without additional costs to their cars’ purchase prices.

Zellmer referred to the Level 4 autonomous driving system that should become available in new electric VW models soon. The automaker predicts its self-driving option to cost about 7 Euro per hour of driving, keeping it cheap for car owners and profitable for the company. Zellmer compared it to the train tickets price, claiming 7 Euro to be less than one have to pay to get to any destination within one hour in Europe by train.
