Tesla is working on batteries that would be capable of lasting over 1 million miles. The production is likely to start next year.

Elon Musk mentioned the need for longer-lasting batteries at Tesla Autonomy Investor Day last week while talking about the Robotaxi ridesharing service. He claimed that Tesla vehicles should be as durable as possible for the Robotaxi economics to work and achieve "hyper-efficiency".

Musk also noted, that current Tesla vehicles and drive units are designed, tested and validated for 1 million miles of operation. However, batteries are not built for such purpose - for instance, Model 3 battery modules should last between 300,000 and 500,000 miles, even though it is still a great value.
