Today Tesla use Panasonic’s cells in its battery packs. Model S and Model X cells are being imported from the manufacturer’s Japanese facility, while Model 3 ones are being produced also by Panasonic at the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada.

Though, any EV maker had to rely very much on its suppliers in case of not producing battery capacity in-house. This fact is supported by recent Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar’s EV production pauses due to LG Chem cells shortages.

However, Tesla recently purchased several companies owning some cells production technologies. Those purchases include Maxwell (producer of supercapacitors) and Hibar (produces equipment for battery cells production).
