Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are being equipped with cabin-facing camera mounted in the fascia of a cabin mirror right from the start of both models production. Though, Tesla claimed those cameras to be activated only this June while releasing a software update. Company said that videos collected by those cameras are going to be transferred to Tesla engineers in order to improve the vehicles’ safety.

However, one of Tesla owners - hacker nicknamed @greentheonly - obtained the data stored inside the software managing the given camera. It turns out that the device is capable to detect the driver’s head movements and direction of sight, and evaluate how well the driver is focused on the road, thus making conclusions about the safety level during the ride.
⠀
Tesla software contains several parameters that describes where the driver’s eyes are pointing, their head’s turn and tilt, the presence of sunglasses and possible eyes direction under its lens. The camera also may detect whether the driver is blinded by the darkness around or bright sunlight, and if driver’s attention is grabbed by the mobile phone.
