Tesla Autopilot had safest quarter

05.05.2020

Each quarter Tesla releases a report measuring its Autopilot level of safety on public roads. The Autopilot got several minor and major improvements (like traffic lights recognition) since previous Q4 2019 report. The last one released on May 1 showed a serious increase in safety, estimated in number of accidents per 1 mile travelled by all Tesla cars with Autopilot engaged throughout the period.

In Q1 2020 Tesla with Autopilot engaged were involved in one accident every 4.68 million miles. Compare this to each 3.07 million miles in Q4 2019.

Even more representative is yet another piece of data which estimates the number of road accidents involving Tesla with Autopilot off. In a case when Autopilot is not engaged but Tesla safety systems (e.g., automatic emergency braking) are active, cars were involved in one accident each 1.99 million miles. With all safety measures off the figure drops to 1.42 million miles, meaning Autopilot is already much safer than driving without it.
