Head-to-head comparison showed high efficiency advantage of a new Tesla Model 3 with a heat pump

08.12.2020

Model Y became the first Tesla model to feature the heat pump - device, allowing to heat up the car’s interior without activating the regular electric heater. Heat pump’s main advantage is the increased efficiency, allowing the electric car to have a higher range even in cold climate.

Recently refreshed Tesla Model 3 also got a heat pump in addition to its regular climate control system. Well-know among Tesla community Youtuber Bjorn Nyland became one of the first to compare the 2019 Model 3 with a new car, measuring the energy drain. Both cars were standing still with climate control switched to keep the temperature of 21°C inside (given 3°C outside). After several hours of the test newer Model 3 turned out to be much more efficient, consumed only 735 watts vs 2170 watts the older one required.
