Tesla’s permanent aspiration for production simplification and acceleration is well-known. Giga Press is the new result of such policy. It’s a giant stamping machine, that Tesla already use to make Model Y’s body.
Thanks to Giga Press, now Tesla produces the rear part of a compact SUV’s body in a single piece, instead of 70 various parts that had to be pulled together earlier. That is much faster in production and results a stiffer body thanks to much less joints. The automaker is planning to launch the front body part production using Giga Press, thus making Model Y’s body two-piece.
Giga Press is yet the first machine of such kind. It is made by Italian Idra Group. Recently Tesla released a video of Giga Press in operation at the Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, where this machine 300 assembly robots:
